How to Cope With Divorce During COVID-19

Posted on 20th May 2020 by Vuria Admin in Divorce and Custody

Divorce can be difficult for anyone to go through at any time… even more so during a global pandemic. If you and your spouse have recently decided to go separate ways, here are few tips on how to cope with divorce during an already difficult time.

Use Technology to Lean on Family and Friends for Support

The initial stages of divorce can be lonely, so it’s important to not isolate yourself. Of course, we don’t mean physically, as right now self-quarantining and social distancing are paramount, but rather mentally and emotionally. Though you may not be able to see those you love face to face, keeping up with friends and family through video conferencing or phone calls is a great way to find support during this difficult time. This allows you to safely express your emotions and know that you have someone who you can turn to. When you’re used to being with a partner, it can be incredibly lonely to suddenly be without one, and the stay-at-home order only magnifies that.

Hire a Lawyer

Just because the world has slowed down right now does not mean that it isn’t feasible to be proactive. Many law firms are working remotely, utilizing technology in order to serve their clients during the pandemic. We are available to meet clients in the office as necessary with added precautions.  It’s important to contact a lawyer as soon as possible when you’ve decided on a divorce in order to protect yourself and your assets. A lawyer can help guide you in the next steps to take so that you can focus on healing and getting your affairs in order.

Focus on Taking Care of Yourself

While it may seem tempting to veg out with so much extra time at home, it’s vital to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Divorce can be a traumatic experience, so make sure you exercise regularly, eat healthfully, and get enough sleep. This will help you manage stress and emotion related to your divorce that may arise.

Save, Save, Save

At a time when many are experiencing financial hardship, it’s critical to save money anywhere you can. If you’ve been laid off or furloughed, file for unemployment as soon as possible. Finances become particularly important because divorce is a process that can be a heavy financial burden. Attorney’s fees can quickly add up and you may be financially responsible once the divorce is final. In Arizona, debts accumulated during the marriage are typically split equally. Therefore, saving money as early as possible can keep you afloat.

Pick up a New Skill

Divorce often allows people to see what they may have neglected in their life before. While staying indoors during the pandemic may seem like a burden, it can actually be a great time to learn a new skill or revisit an old hobby. Read a book, learn to cook a new recipe, or take an online course. This not only gives you something to do during all the downtime, it can help you reconnect with yourself.
